Summer is finally here!!

Posted by Rick Wednesday, June 18, 2014 1:29:00 PM

Are you as excited as I am right now?  Summer has finally arrived, and not a moment too soon.  Vacations are in full swing (I should know...I already took mine!) and offices are running on "skeleton crews".  You know, with the right equipment in your office, having one or two less people in the office does not have to be a disaster.  A full-scale MFP system with the right tools will make those long, tedious tasks easier and more efficient.  Scan-to-file, scan-to-email, I-faxing...the list goes on and on.  What used to take hours and many people to do can now be cut virtually in half with half as many people.  Thank goodness for technology, huh?

Also, I wanted to feature a product or two on each blog now, and one of the newest products to hit the market is the Formax Colormax 7, full-bleed printer.  This thing is amazing.  It prints over 16 million colors, 3,600 pieces per hour and is full-bleed...all at a third of the cost of a standard inkjet printer!  You can get up to 1600 x x1600dpi on the resolution scale and in the end, truly decrease  your printing costs.  Formax also has the Colormax LP, with the LP meaning 'label printer'.  Same technology, different need.  And you thought we just did copiers!!

Happy Memorial Day to all...

...may it be safe and happy for you this year!!
Posted by Rick Thursday, May 22, 2014 9:10:00 AM

We all have stories to tell when it comes to Memorial Day memories of years past.  I know that I have a ton, but I will not bore you with the gory details today!  I wanted to take this opportunity to wish you and your family and loved ones a safe and happy Memorial Day holiday.  Yeah, I know.  A day off from work (for most!) picnics and parties and such, but in the end, let us not forget why we get the day off and why we can party and have fun.  Our veterans paid the price then, and continue to pay the price now, for freedoms that I feel a lot of people out there take for granted.

My father was a Marine and served in the Vietnam War.  He came home--many did not.  He says that he is forever lucky to be alive, as many of his comrades echo the same sentiment during the years since coming back home.  For families that lost loved ones, it is not a time for partying and revelry but more for an introspection, a reflection and a remembrance of those that once stood by us but have since fallen in the line of duty.  The owner of CBM is himself a wartime veteran, having served in the first part of the Iraqi War.  His duty, and the work of many others in the military, should never be forgotten.

This Memorial Day, I think that it is also necessary that we thank and remember those that have fallen in the line of duty as a first responder.  Their work and their dedication should never be diminshed, as they are our local heroes, giving of their free time to take care of others.  While we work and play, they keep us secure, safe, and healthy in their line of duty.  They train and study for countless hours, making sure that when the time comes that they need to be pressed into service, they will know what to do.  Some have entered burning buildings, gone into hostile situations and have never returned alive.  Like our military men and women, they paid the ultimate price...their lives.  Some have left families of wives and children behind for the good of our society.

In the end, I am using this blog today to thank them all for what they have done and what they do to keep my family safe and secure.  I appreciate their efforts, and I realize that without them, this world would be a far nastier place to live in and to raise a family.  So, this holiday weekend, as you raise a glass of whatever you drink, as you eat that juicy burger, please remember how you got this far, and thank a veteran.  Thank a police officer, a fire fighter, a medic.  Just thank them.  They will know what you are saying and they will appreciate it.  Happy Memorial Day!!

If you are looking to have Managed Print Services, do it right...

...(or else, you may end up paying more!)
Posted by Rick Thursday, May 8, 2014 11:20:00 AM

The world, as we know it, is full of fads.  Some stick for a while, some fade rapidly.  Pet rocks, lava lamps and The Backstreet Boys have all come and gone...some with great fanfare, some ever so quietly.  The latest "fad" that may be here to stay is managed print services.  We heard about this phenomenon about 10 years ago from one of our manufacturing reps, but never really questioned it until it began to take better shape in Corporate America.  The world of standard copying and printing was about to change--drastically--and if you were a company that made its living dealing with copiers and printers, you either loaded up and got with the program or you moved over and got out of the way.  Companies were being overcharged and overrun with technology, and the costs were rising.  Customers were fed up with these rising costs and they needed a lifeline, a life preserver to help them float until a better process came along.  Well, it finally did come along.  Mangaged Print Services, or MPS for short, was going to finally pull the plug on the money machine and give everybody a level playing field, while reducing costs for customers.  In theory, if done right, companies would save a ton of money while still allowing their copier/printer vendor the opportunity to reel in their costs and make them more streamlined and more profitable.  Nice idea, but only if the vendor was willing to pony up the cash to create a whole new world within their four walls first.  Specialists would have to be trained, new technology would have to be plugged in and new thoughts and theories on how printers were sold would have to be grown.  Gone were the days of plugging in a copier or printer, writing up a contract and waiting for the profit to pour in.  Customers were pleading for help, and help is what they got.  MFP companies saddled up for the long process of tooling up and forged ahead.  Some took the shortcut approach while some really took the time to learn the craft and understand what it was that they were doing for the customer base.  The shortcut artists are really doing nothing but working some figures and re-packaging what they have been selling all along.  You would be amazed at what a little smoke and mirrors does for you!  But, companies like CBM took the time to travel to another city, spent days and evenings at a conference center, learning how to actually do a "managed print audit", how to expose pockets of money loss, revamping the customer's thoughts on what a print fleet should truly look like, and sell the new process to the customer.  Unfortunately, in some places, it is a tough sell.  You are often times changing the landscape of the office environment, forcing the customer to change their workflow in order to save large sums of money.  And as you know, change is hard for some people.  Harder, especially if they did not understand what it was you were trying to accomplish on their dime.  Sometimes, customers were already thinking ahead and began the process of change, making the final goal an easy, quick and painless process.  But at the end of the day, there is money savings to be had...but only if you do it right.

At CBM Business Machines, we do it right via a complete and thorough process.  We take the time to go to each installation site to understand the environment, to see the workflow and to listen to the end users.  These are the people that make the company flow and their ideas truly do count, especially when it comes to what I like to call the "office epiphany"--seeing new ideas and understanding how they will make your life cheaper and easier upon implementation.  Yes, it takes a little more time to get the process completed, but when you receive the final analysis report, you will know that the folks here at CBM took the time to understand your company, its workflows, its ebbs and flows, and that in the end, we have nothing but your company in mind.  We make sure that we leave no stone unturned.  It is the right way to do things, and we believe that if you cannot do it right, don't do it at all.

So, if you are sitting there, reading this and wondering if there is a possibility that CBM may be able to reduce the costs that are bleeding you to death, and hopefully helping you to increase the bottom line, give us a shout to come out and do a print audit.  They are free for us to do, and we truly love doing them.  it allows us an ability to understand your company in ways that many vendors do not.  We want to be a vendor "partner" with you and prove that there is truly money to be made inside those machines..

Spring cleaning is not all that bad, you know!!

Posted by Rick Monday, April 14, 2014 9:05:00 AM

Well, we may be getting a little more cold weather in the next few days, but that pales in comparison to the awesome weather weekend that we just had.  The warmth was just what the doctor ordered, and many took to the playgrounds, parks and waterways to enjoy the true first glimpse of spring for 2014.  However, with the warmth, it has become quite apparent that the annual ritual of spring cleaning will be upon us very, very soon.  Spring cleaning, though a lot of work for many, is a welcomed sight, as the throngs of "stuff" that was hoarded up over the winter is put out at the curbside for trash.  Windows are opened to allow the rush of fresh air to push out the old, stale, wintry air from our homes, and laundry lines are full of freshly washed linens and clothing.

Spring cleaning has also begun to many offices around us too.  With tax season about to end, I, like many of my cohorts, find this the perfect time to do some spring cleaning with our desk areas, conduct file cabinet cleanups and even do some old file deletion on our computer desktops in keeping with the spring cleaning mantra.  Either way, we all can feel spring in the air, and it makes us much happier.  When taking this time to do some cleaning around the office, keep in mind that those old files really should be shredded and destroyed, lest you become a target of information thieves.  A good office shredder will last you a lifetime if you purchase the right one.  Formax, one of the leaders in office document shredders, is a manufacturing vendor of CBM's and has supplied us with one of the strongest lines of shredders in the industry.  We also represent Kobra, a veritable newcomer to this industry, but the makers of one of the sturdiest deskside shredders that you will see (they are also designed by Ferrari!!).

So, pack away those thermal undies, break out the flip-flops, and get prepared for one of the best springs in recent memory!!  Oh, and don't forget the shredder!!

Tax season is half over

(did you file YOUR taxes yet?)
Posted by Rick Tuesday, March 4, 2014 8:51:00 AM

2014...the year of not being able to catch a break!  The weather has been the worst in quite a few years and now, I am talking about tax season.  But the reality is that tax season is half over now.  Did you file yet?  I know that every year, we talk a big game in my house about having the taxes done by March 1, but as usual, I am lagging behind this year once again.  Not sure why the procrastination, but it is a common theme.  What should be a common theme for our CBM customers, new, old and potential, is that you should use this time of year to take an inventory of the pieces of equipment around you.  Not a bad time of year to replace or refresh a printer in the office, take a look at that copier contract that you have not pulled out of the drawer since the day you put it in there, or maybe just give us a call to talk briefly about what new technoilogy exists out there to move  your office into the 21st century.

It is also a perfect time of year to talk about some spring deals.  We are just like anybody else in the business world.  Our warehouses stack up over the winter with inventory, stored junk and lots of boxes and skids, and we will make use of the warmer weather (once it gets here!) and do a thorough spring cleaning.  Along with the massive clean out, we also like to move inventory, so be on alert for a great deal as we clean out the winter warehouse doldrums and put together a "deal of the century" for you!

Oh, and before I forget, may I take this time to wish our Irish (and those who claim to be Irish!) at this time of year an early Happy Saint Patrick's Day.  Pretty cool how the wearing o' the green lines up perfectly with the beginning of spring.  Somehow, even the green haters have to agree that they are more than ready to see the green real soon.  Enjoy!!

It's Cold Outside!! (But the Deals Are Hot!!)

Ugh!!  I know...so cliche.  I just could not help myself!  But it is honestly true in this case.  February has roared on in with horrible, cold, snowy weather, and the groundhog is just KILLING us this year with 6 more weeks of the white stuff.  But inside CBM Business Machines, things are just heating up (oops!  another cliche!).

I was trying to figure out what to blog about today, and it came to me as plain as day.  We are in the midst of tax season and I would imagine that most of you are heading to the tax preparation facilities to get those taxes done this year, right?  Tax preparation means a lot of paperwork...an unimaginable amount of paperwork.  Some needed, some not so much.  Useless paperwork that gets trashed, incinerated or whatever method exists to destroy unneeded files.  Let's face it folks...the best way to do this is with a comemrcial-grade, steel and chain-driven paper shredder.  Not the cool little one you get by opening an account at the local bank.  No way.  I am talking about the machine that will shred steel if it had to.  And believe me, they exist!!  I have a machine down here at CBM that will actually shred pennies.  I have the pieces to prove it.  In this day and age, it is necessary to protect everything you have, and that includes your identity and your account numbers.  A common ripping of the paper will not get the job done.  You need massive paper destruction.  You need something that you do not need to stop and take the staples out of, or pull all of the paper clips out.  You need supreme paper and file annihilation!!  And, believe it or not, we have that here at CBM.  They come in all shapes and sizes, speeds and feeds, vanilla or loaded up.  At the end of the day, if yoiu have a need, we have a machine.  You just need to take that first step and give us a call.  We will take a look at your situation and match you up with the necessary machine.  Don't really have the budget money right now?  We can also hook you up with low-cost, short-term leasing to get the job done.  But, you will have ot pick up that other marvel of science and living...the telephone...and give us a call.

Welcome 2014!!

Posted by Rick Monday, January 6, 2014 9:17:00 AM

Hey everybody!!  Hard to believe that 2013 is in the books and 2014 is now locked and loaded.  The weather is not cooperating much, but that is to be expected in our region for January.  Weather aside, there is reason for much optimism this coming year.  Canon and Copystar continue to churn out some great machines, and the lease companies are also following suit with some unbelievable rates moving into the first quarter of the year.  If your offie is looking to do an upgrade, it may sound like a cliche, but it is the right time ot buy or lease.  The prices, the rates and the products are all top-notch!  Along with that, our marketing will focus on a different piece of the business as we move through the first quarter:  document security.  Now, we tried this last year with very little effect, but I still feel very confident that companies must put their best foot forward each and every day, and data protection should be one of those things that is not just talked about but acted upon.  If corporate identities get stolen, it will be your own fault.  The stories exist, and we have all heard them.  The common thinking of 'it will never happen to me' will be somebody's battle cry as they are untangling their company from weeks worth of issues from a data thief doing them harm.  It is very simple folks:  for less than $1,500, you can take care of those issues with a high-end paper shredder.  And I do not mean one of theose $99 jobbies that you can get at the big box retailer.  You will buy those until the end of time.  For what you would pay for a decent laser printer, you can assure yourself of destroying documents that you no longer need, rather than take a chance on throwing them away and hope that they get to the landfill before Sticky Fingers Sammy gets your information.  And you know what?  It only takes one time to make a huge mess, and that is a mess that you do not need.

Well, that's it for now.  Keep checking back, as we will be havng some exciting news on fabulous, new products for the coming year.

Stay warm!!

Merry Christmas and a Very Happy, Healthy New Year!!

Posted by Rick Friday, December 20, 2013 9:09:00 AM

Well, as the calendar days are dwindling down to zero, and the new year is just around the corner, it is a perfect time for some introspection, and take the time to really think about the year that we have just come through.  We should always relish the good times, understand the bad times and set forth on a pathway to make the new year bigger and better than the last.  That is why we try, ever so hard, to make resolutions and stick with them, though if you are like me, it is one of the toughest things to do.  But, once again, on New Year's Eve, I will be making those resolutions, and figuring out a way to stick to them.

So, as we close the books on 2013, I want to take this time to thank each and every one of our customers for their business, for their friendships and for taking the time to get to know me and my company.  Because, as you know, that is what TRUE business is about.  it is about the relationships.  It is about building trust, and knowing that CBM will be there through the good times and through the bad, making sure that you are taken care of like WE would like to be taken care of.  If you are just passing through and are not a current customer, we ask that if the opportunity arises, please give us a chance to earn that trust and that opportunity to serve your office automation needs.

On behalf of all of us here at CBM Business Machines, may you have a very Merry Christmas, a very Happy Hanukkah, a peaceful and Happy Kwanzaa, and may the New Year find you happy, healthy and prosperous.  Remember to help others when you can, and the staff and I look forward to seeing you in 2014!!

Happy Thanksgiving to all!!

(best one yet?)
Posted by Rick Monday, November 25, 2013 10:36:00 AM

Having a blog is pretty cool because it gives me a chance to keep our customers and friends up to date with interesting facts and great deals when they arise.  It also gives me a cahnce ot represent the company when it comes to bridging CBM with the outside world.  So, I would just like to take this opportunity to wish all of you, from all of us at CBM Business Machines, a very happy Thanksgiving.  This is a great time of year because Thanksgiving gives us a chance to reflect on all that we have and all that we hope to have and achieve in the coming new year.  This holiday is also the gateway holiday to one of the most magical times of the year with the Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa holidays.

So, in this Thanksgiving 2013, we hope that you will take the time to relax, catch up with family and friends, and realize all that there is in this world and the ability to accomplish all that you set out to accomplish.  God bless!

Take the time...you will be glad that you did

The dreaded "changing of the clocks" has decended upon us once again, and even though we have gained the extra hour of sleep, it will not be long until that hour is long gone and we are once again 'sleep-deprived'.  This is the perfect time of year, as many of the fire departments talk about, to change those batteries in your smoke detectors.  With the cold, winter days closing in, the furnaces and heaters will be warming the cockles of our hearts, and if faulty, warming the floor boards beneath your feet.  So, do yourself a favor, and change those batteries.

While you are changing those batteries at home, it is also the perfect time of year to take some notice of the machinery in your office setting too.  Printers have come down in price so drastically lately, and the yields are getting better, the cost-per-page is dwindling, and there is money to be saved...if you just take the time to do the math and do the homework.  CBM specializes in doing Print Audits, and if you click on one of the buttons on the website that says "PRINT AUDIT", you will see all of the details of what we can do to help you and your organization save money...BIG money...on the cartridges that  you purchase throughout the year.  How would you like to buy toner for your machine only once a year versus dropping a $125 on pop on a drum/toner cartridge, let's say, every other month?  It certainly adds up, and if you are not careful, you will find yourself spending way too much for a consumable that should cost you a fraction of what you spend each time.

How about that copier contract that you continue to vow to take a look at and start price shopping one of these days?  If you feel that your contract is out of whack, or you feel that maybe you are spending way too much for the maintenance, take this time to make the call to us to look at your contract to see if there are any cost savings to be had.

One last item of note:  the time has come to work smarter, not harder.  We are a full-line Formax dealership, and we have the tools to help you run your office more efficiently.  We love to talk to people who are open and willing to at least take a look at making the necessary changes to make their lives, and the lives of their staff, less stressful and more productive.  It does not take a bank roll to acquire the machines capable of doiong the work of two or three people that you DO NOT have on your staff.  Paper shredders for destroying documents that you do not want, pressure sealers to eliminate the need for envelopes, paper folders and folder/inserters, and a host of other items designed to assist in everyday work.

So, change those batteries, test those smoke detectors and then pick up the phone and call CBM to find your new piece of office equipment!
